Beat The Donkey ROCKS Le Poisson Rouge!!

Review of the show from DIY Website:

Check out the full review here!!

Cyro Baptista’s show begins with an eerie whirring noise, generated by flexible tubes spun by the ten or twelve members of his band Beat The Donkey. Baptista enters slowly, dressed in a flamboyant wizardly robe, and begins intoning chant-like syllables into the microphone. After a few seconds, the lights go up and the show starts in earnest, with Baptista and his band delivering their trademark blend of exuberant silliness and percussive virtuosity. Even without the wizard robe, though, Baptista comes off less as a bandleader and more as a Puckish magical spirit, marshaling the fantastical forces of his minions with glee and caprice.

In reality, the Sao Paulo-born Baptista is one of the world’s most accomplished percussionists, having won multiple Grammy awards and recorded with the likes of David Byrne and Yo-Yo Ma. He is deeply aware of the traditions he upholds - at the outset of the show, he mentions how humbled he is to be playing at what used to be The Village Gate, a “sacred” stage where Tito Puente played. But when he’s playing with Beat The Donkey, you get the sense that Baptista doesn’t care much about polishing his resume. He’d rather take that resume, tear it into confetti, and shower the audience with it.

Beat The Donkey most closely resembles a Brazilian bateria, the large and varied percussion ensemble that accompanies the dancers of a samba school in Carnaval parades. Two traditional Brazilian bass drums, called surdos, form the heart of the band, but Baptista adds in a standard drumset, electric guitar and bass, keyboards, and pretty much anything else that he can think of a way to bang on. Many of his instruments are homemade, with strange items strewn all over the floor around him. At one point, frustrated with a malfunctioning microphone, he produces from somewhere a bullhorn and sings into it. All the silliness, though, accompanies great musical skill, whether from the keyboardist wearing a chicken hat, the shredding guitarist in a full NASA suit, or the lightning-speed tap dancers.

The band play a few of Baptista’s best-known songs, including 'Parar de fumar', a sweet song about wanting to quit smoking “so I can kiss you without an ashtray mouth.” But to focus on individual compositions would miss the point of Baptista’s performance style, which focuses on the physical act of creating music. It is only by tearing down the barriers associated with seriousness that he can bring his audience into the special world where he makes the rules, expressing his boundless and whimsical creativity through any medium he sees fit.

Beat The Donkey - #1 Act at SINES Festival in Portugal!!

Beat the Donkey Played the SINES Festival in Portugal last weekend and by all accounts were the highlight of the festival. The band was brought out for 2 encores and if the audience had their way, BTD would have played all night!!

BTD guitarist Clay Ross put the experience into words:

I just played in one of the most unforgettable concerts of my life, with some of the most incredible musicians I know, in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, for one of the most open and enthusiastic audiences I've ever seen. It wasn't perfect and it wasn't all planned, but it was glorious, cathartic, and couldn't have been more real.

These tough times have affected a lot of people. For a big group like ours, this has meant less opportunities to perform together. Luckily, our one show of the summer was completely revitalizing. It was wonderful to be reminded that there is simply nothing in this world like "Beat the Donkey;" Cyro is crazy in the most beautiful way, and together we can lift 5,000+ people into a sonic whirlwind of heavy metal - noise - funk - forro - freak out!

We developed the "hillbilly" cue for some chicken pickin'; Nicolas brought the house down on a bass heavy tap box; Ze took the metal growl to a new level (sources report that the sound-man of a scandinavian thrash band literally cried); Gilo made King Crimson his bitch; Brian was grooving so hard he levitated over the keys (he also played the entire show with a chicken on his head); Cyro had the world on the string of his Berimbau and lead us from heaven to hell, and back again.
To end our first encore we lead the audience to repeat a simple melody and walked off stage. They keep this melody alive for over 20 minutes. They demanded that we return for one last song.

Thank you Sines for making it certain that we have much more music to make! We will see you again soon.

Love the Donkey,
Clay Ross

"Water is Life" film features music perfomed by Cyro

Cyro recorded original compositions by the amazing Aya Nishina for a film being shown at the California Academy of Sciences. The film focuses on the importance of water to our planet.

The Water Planet exhibit is designed to be infinitely flexible. Dozens of tanks, from five to 5,000 gallons in size, contain an ever-changing variety of fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates. Once an hour, the lights go down inside the tanks, the room transforms into a 360-degree projection theater, and visitors are immersed in a five-minute film about the most precious resource on the planet: water.

Last June, Cyro went into the studio to record on Yo Yo Ma's Holiday album. The track featured the legendary Dave Brubeck on piano and his son Matt Brubeck on cello.

The 4 musicians recorded Matt Brubeck's arrangement of Concordia - one of the highlights on an album that is truly great from start to finish.

Yo Yo Ma and Friend's "Songs of Joy and Peace" is out now on Sony Records!
